Calvin: Is our quick experience here pointless? Does anything we say or do in here really matter? Have we done anything important? Have we been happy?[/caption]
"You are free and that is why you are lost." -- Franz Kafka
This is it. This is where you live and this is where all your actions lie. This is where you were born and this is where you'd sooner or later die.
You can think all about it but you'd find no respite from here. This is the harsh truth, my friend, whether you are a fool, sage or seer.
The truth, as I see it:
You have been put here with no context to or reason of your presence. That you don't leave easily from here is ensured by your being biologically tethered to the worldly attachments. Nothing you can possibly do while you're here would have an effect over anything. Yet you must do something in order to pass your time here.
There is no inherent morality or ethics in this world. There is neither good or bad, nor god or religion here. All of these are constructs of those humans from the past who knew this truth and wanted their time to pass.
You'd influence a couple, may be a dozen or a thousand other people while you're here. And then you'd leave. May be you'd leave a legacy behind you, which would also die down with the passage of time.
Nothing matters. Make no mistakes or false perceptions about your own greatness. You are a small nothing in this infinite and there is no meaning and purpose of your existence. Time is the supreme ruler. It was there in the beginning and it will be there when nothing else remains.
You can spend your time here in the following ways:-
1) Unintentionally, be completely unaware of this truth and spend your entire life in the pursuit of worldly attachments - material stuff, physical pleasures, respect, fame and favour of society
2) Feel that there is something wrong or missing in life, and spend your time in pursuit of a meaning and a purpose of/to your life.
3a) Be aware of the truth and decide to pass your time here by finding something to do that would ensure that you stay unaware of this truth for as long a time as possible.
3b) Be aware of the truth and decide to end your life.
4) Be aware of this truth but believe that this is not the ultimate truth, and try to find the complete truth by disconnecting yourself from worldly attachments and by finding a path to seek what can be called as enlightenment.
3b is a special case of 3a where you can’t find anything to pass time with and have a lesser tendency to be blinded by worldly attachments.
One following a lesser numbered way will not completely understand, and hence won’t follow, a higher numbered way.
All the above is my *current* understanding of human existence. According to me, the way 2 is equivalent to being in a state of existential crisis. After being in this way for a while, realization of the above truth (as I see it) has allowed me to start living in the way 3a.
This realization would also help in understanding the uselessness of having an ego, for with the understanding that you are nothing more than an accident, the false sense of self importance also gets destroyed.
